There are many trails in Alberta, and abroad, that I have a strong desire to hike. Like most outdoor enthusiasts, I’d ideally explore each and every one of them, good or bad, before I meet my maker. This is obviously impossible, and I think that making too broad a bucket list of trails will only lead to disappointment, in that you probably won’t be able to see them all (or see them all in good weather at least). In all likelihood, I will complete many trails next year, but I’ve narrowed it down to three that I must do, then everything I hike after that just feels like gravy.
3) Pharoh Peaks
This Hike up to the Pharoh Peaks looks absolutely mystical, pun sort of intended. This Egypt-themed area of the Rockies located in Banff National Park contains some sights that I must photograph for myself. Three tiers of alpine lakes: Egypt, Scarab, and Mummy, all lie at a slightly higher elevation than the next. Mixed with the surrounding bowl of mountains, this epic landscape must feel like a dream in person.
2) Skoki Lodge
I have a lot of potential back-country camping trips planned. This route, near the Lake Louise Ski Resort, appears to be gorgeous on its own but also leads to the comfortably rustic-looking Skoki Lodge. Here you can grab some warm grub, tea, and even a cold beer. The best part about this lodge? It is only accessible via the multi-day trail, so crowding should be at a minimum or nothing like the other touristy areas at Lake Louise at the very least.
1) Mount Assiniboine
This is a multi-day trail, but I kind of wish it was shorter. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good back-country camping trip, but I am excited to finally be able to see the awe-inspiring “Matterhorn of the Rockies”. A two-day trip on foot appears to be more than worth it to experience Mount Assiniboine first-hand, however. I have reason to believe that this is one of the most popular and iconic sights in Canada for reasons that only photos can describe, hopefully, photos that I’ve taken myself next summer.
